The Lay Brothers' Reredorter

This was the 12th century latrines for the Lay Brothers. It was linked to the dormitory and had the provision of a long row of cubicles which were arranged over the main drain. This building is the only one which has survived to full roof height. Within this building have been found traces of medieval wall paintings.

After the dissolution of the the monastery, it even saw use as a cow barn. Many people will have childhood memories of a simple cafe which operated here.

The reredorter is soon to house the new Visitor Centre and Educational resource facility, following the successful bid for National Lottery funding.

The reredorter has survived quite intact. Originally it was linked to the dormitory. The buttresses have been added to support the structure, probably in Victorian times.
