Celebrating 850 Years

This year Kirkstall Abbey, Leeds, West Yorkshire, celebrates 850 years since its foundation in the year 1152.

The name Kirkstall means Church-stead. The name is due to the erection of the Abbey. According to the story, Abbot Alexandre travelled from Barnoldswick to Pomfret . He noted that this would be a very suitable place to build the church. No doubt the proximity to the town of Leeds and the commercial potential was also an important consideration. According to Jackson's Guide to Leeds of 1889. "the whole thing was the stroke of a keen business man and had very little to do with the Virgin Mary!"
