The Gatehouse

The Gatehouse now Abbey House Museum
This twelfth century building has been much modified and extended over the years. Following the dissolution of the Abbey, the last Abbot, John Ripley was allowed to retire here. For some time it later served as a farmhouse. More recently it was home members of the Butler family which owned Kirkstall Forge and in 1926 it became a museum.

Abbey House Museum has recently been extended and remodelled following Heritage Lottery Funding. The Norman Hall now houses a cafe and boasts fine Architectural features.

The Gatehouse was separated from the Abbey by the opening of the Turnpike road in 1827. This is now the busy A65.
