Three Leeds-based classical musicians are getting together for a fund-raising concert in St Stephen’s, Kirkstall on Saturday 7th July at 7:30pm.
St Stephen’s was built in 1828 and has been extended twice to serve the growing population of Kirkstall. It is now the only church building in Kirkstall but the fabric is deteriorating. Rain has come through the roof—damaging roof timbers, masonry, plaster work and internal decoration. Work is also needed to restore many of the stained glass windows.
Joanna Gamble’s career has taken her throughout Europe, and in the UK she has sung with Welsh National Opera, Opera North, Scottish Opera and English National Opera.
British/Australian tenor Ben Kerslake was selected for the Opera Queensland Developing Artist Program. As well as a stint at Opera North, he has performed for opera companies the length and breadth of the UK, and has an active concert career.
Michael Cleaver was on the music staff at Opera North for twenty-six years, and prior to that worked for English National Opera, Rhine Opera and was Head of Music at Bremen.
They will perform songs from Vaughan Williams’ ‘On Wenlock Edge, Elgar’s ‘Sea Pictures” and a second half of popular British and American songs and duets in aid of the St Stephen’s Restoration Fund. The fund’s specific aim is to raise £50,000 this year in order to secure an English Heritage grant to repair the church roof.
Kirkstall resident, Joanna, says “this is a building which has been a focal point for the Kirkstall community since it was completed in 1829. We’re hoping lots of local people will come along to support us and help us to ensure it’s there for future generations to enjoy. They’ll be getting an excellent evening’s entertainment (plus free refreshments) for £7.50.”
“Local businesses have been very generous buying advertising space in the programme to pay for the piano hire, and we’ve also enjoyed great support from our local councillors. What we need now is a good audience to make the event a success.”
Tickets will be available on the door, or in advance by ringing 0113 267 7775
