A celebration of Irish arts and culture kicks off in Leeds from the 10th of November to the 29th of November 2014. Dozens of events including music sessions, literary events, film and educational events are to take place at venues across Leeds, bringing some of Ireland’s finest artists to the city.
“The thinking behind the Leeds Gathering is to provide a platform for the Irish community in Leeds to showcase their rich and vibrant cultural traditions. We are also interested in developing new audiences for Irish arts and culture” said Alison Childs, IAF Development Officer.
The Leeds Gathering features some of the most dynamic local, national and international performers and artistes in the world of Irish and Celtic arts. We are particularly excited this year to welcome a new band on the trad scene The Dónal Murphy Band. November 2013 marked the formation of this dynamic new Irish band featuring Dónal Murphy (accordion), Theresa Kavanagh (fiddle) and Mike Galvin (guitar). The three come together with a wealth of experience in performing with some of the best traditional bands in Ireland such as Four Men and a Dog, Sliabh Notes, De Danann, The Mike McGoldrick Band, Dónal Lunny and various members of Capercaille. This is going to be an excellent night. In support we have local folk heroes Gemma Irving (guitar/vocals) and Ian Pearson (fiddle). This all takes place in the magnificent setting of the Left Bank on Cardigan Road on Friday 14th November.
Other events in this area include a traditional Irish music session in The Bridge Inn Kirkstall on Saturday 15th November and a performance from Leeds University Union Irish Dance Society at Kirkstall Abbey Deli Market on Saturday 29th November.
The official launch of the festival takes on the 13th November at 7:30pm in Bewleys Hotel, Leeds where all are welcome.
