If you didn’t manage to see the brilliant SCRAP at the Kirkstall Festival a couple of week’s ago you missed out on our local children (and parents) getting creative building colourful art projects out of, well for want of a better word – rubbish. 

SCRAP are a social enterprise based in Leeds, focused on helping the environment by reusing waste materials from businesses as resources for art and Play. S.C.R.A.P has a warehouse which is open to everyone, full to the rafters of discarded materials, originally destined for landfill. These materials are sold at very low prices and reused for art and play purposes by local community groups, schools, students and individuals. As well as the fantastical scrap shop they offer a variety of services. training for adults and children, scrapsheds, containers full of outdoor play resources for schools, family learning, art drop- in sessions, schools projects and out of school activities all based around the environment and reuse.

“It was a brilliant festival and we all had a great day. The families loved the activity and some kept returning. We prepared over 400 templates for the activity and these were all used.

“The families arts area was very successful. The activities we delivered were easy to do and enabled all age groups to join in and take part. Using recycled materials children and adults created beautiful masks and weaved projects. On the day we had approx 450 participants taking part. Age groups from 1 year to 50 years. We had many fathers participating and 30% people of ethnic minority.

“The arts activity provided families with a space they could come into to share the experience and achieve an individual piece they could take home. We also created a large sculpture which anyone from the festival could take part in.”
